R.G. Johnson was a trusted partner to help support Allegheny Mineral's first foray into underground limestone mining. We were tasked with securing an open highwall face that would be used to gain access to the inner mine workings. Our expert crews first evaluated the scope of the work and consulted with mine management as to a suggested rib support plan. We then used our experience to determine the areas more susceptible to future deterioration that would require additional bolting/support. R.G. Johnson safely and efficiently installed the necessary bolts, wire mesh and shotcrete to ensure ease of operations and peace of mind for our customer.

Scope of Work:

Shotcrete Application

Project Overview:

Our crews used our on-site shotcrete batching system to mix and pump shotcrete from the surface to the slope bottom staging areas. Sealing the roof and ribs with shotcrete will extend the life of the mine entries that will be used around the supply/belt slope bottom area. Also, concrete was pumped to several belt drive/transfer locations that feed the slope. All work was performed from the surface using a single central borehole. This solution saved the customer significant costs as compared to supplying and performing the work from underground

Scope of Work:

Installation of Steel Partition Wall in Full Depth of Shaft

Project Overview:

Support angles were installed on the concrete lining from the coal seam to the surface. Then, we installed full width panels from the bottom to the top of the shaft. The job was finished with transition pieces on the surface from the shaft to a fan and on the bottom from the shaft to the return entry. This solution saved the customer significant costs and time as compared to a new bleeder shaft.

Scope of Work:

Extending Existing Shaft Liner into Coal Seam

Project Overview:

To achieve the Cumberland bleeder shaft extension, we filled open mine entries with cellular concrete which allowed the shaft to be drilled by others to within 100 feet of the coal seam. Then, used conventional shaft sinking techniques to excavate and shotcrete line the shaft from the steel lining to the coal seam including excavating the cellular concrete plug in the shaft bottom. This solution saved the customer significant costs as the shaft extension allowed the entries below to be mined on time. The shaft was also use for intake air which allowed the mine to operate while waiting for another ventilation shaft to be completed.

Project Overview:

Work was performed from a platform lift to install roof bolts and strapping to aging mine entries. The roof support will extend the useful life of the mine which is used to store corporate records.

Scope of Work:

Re-use of an abandoned mine shaft to access a different seam

Project Overview:

Our crews excavated backfill material from the concrete lined shaft to the Sewickley coal seam at a depth of 450 Feet. This solution saved the customer significant costs as compared to the all-in cost of a new ventilation shaft.

Scope of Work:

Pump High Strength Grout over 6,000ft. to Belt Drive/Transfer Floor

Project Overview:

We created and tested high strength grout solutions for belt transfer floors that can be pumped extreme distances from the surface to the placement point. Over 550 cubic yards of high strength grout were pumped and placed  for the belt line floor. This solution saved the customer costs of transporting hundreds of mine cars full of bag concrete to the site for mixing and placement.
